Create your own wall hanging

About this event

This workshop will cater for all sewing levels and you will come away with your own quilted wallhanging.

You need never have quilted before! We will begin by drawing inspiration from a variety of sources before moving on to creatively piecing together your chosen fabrics. We will do this by 'freequilting' without a pattern, so the outcome will be your own unique composition! Throughout this process we will be looking at colour, texture and collage. We will then handquilt your piece, add the binding and finish the wallhanging.

You will leave the workshop armed with the skills to continue making at home.

We provide:

Cotton quilt wadding.

Rotary blade cutters.

Clear grided ruler in metric sizes (if you prefer to measure in inches please bring your own ruler).

Wooden rod for the back of your wallhanging.

Cutting mats, pins, measuring tape, quilting thread etc. If you feel more comfortable using your own equipment that's fine, bring it along.

There will be a selection of small scraps available to choose from which are complimentary. Extra linens are also available to buy from Bricolage shop. Linens will be at a discounted rate of 20% during the class and for a week after.

Time: 5.5 hours working time

What you need to bring:

Your sewing machine if you have one. If not, please get in contact before the class and we will aim to supply one for you.

Fabric: you will require a selection of light to medium weight linens or cottons in contrasting colours or patterns for the front of your hanging. Your wallhanging will measure 40cm x 40cm. The fabrics do not have to be specific quilting fabrics and in fact it is preferable that they are not! Just fabrics that you like. They can be new fabrics or cloth which is personal to you, whether they are precious clothes you've loved, clothes from children/grandchildren or even a wedding dress! Using your own fabrics within your wallhanging can often 'connect' you to what is often your first attempt at quilting. Please ensure your fabrics have been prewashed.

You will also require a single piece of fabric for the back, measuring approx. 50cm x 50cm

Please do not bring fabrics which contain lycra or silks as these respond differently to stitching and require their own involved preparations, which we can discuss during the workshop.

It will be helpful to record your making process on your phone or camera and a notebook is also handy.

This will be a small class so booking early is recommended.
