Employer-led workshop (UCL Researchers only)

These employer-led workshops (arranged by UCL Careers Service) will introduce you to the employability skills that are required in today’s workplace and provide opportunities for you to develop and practise these skills. They will also demonstrate the transferable nature of the research skills you have acquired during your PhD, from an employer's perspective. In the process you will gain a better understanding of the UK labour market, and meet and network with potential employers and find out about career paths in a range of sectors.

Led by members of The Brilliant Club with experience of both academic and non-academic employment, this workshop will focus on translating the skills built up during PhD studies into non-academic workplaces. We will examine ways to both identify the transferable skills that come from academic studies, and tailor the language we use to relate those skills and experiences to employers. This session is particularly aimed at current PhD students and early career researchers.

Activities in the workshop will include:

  • Identifying your personal academic strengths and skills

  • Relating those academic skills to non-academic workplace needs

  • Reflecting on professional introductions (how to describe your PhD in an interview)

  • Interview role-play and feedback loops

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning charity that exists to increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities. They do this by mobilising the PhD community to share its academic expertise with state schools.
