Event description

Description

This workshop examines academic writing conventions with a particular disciplinary focus on the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (please note there will be a similar workshop offered for Science, Technology and Engineering researchers). It will be particularly relevant to those of you in the early stages of writing your thesis.

This is an interactive workshop, involving textual analysis and practical writing exercises.

By the end, you should be able to:

  • reflect on academic writing as a ‘conversation’ and analyse how authors situate their work in relation to existing research
  • recognise the ways in which academic identity is constructed through writing style, as well as the structure of a thesis or article.
  • apply some of these strategies to your own writing practice by writing an abstract
  • write with improved confidence, clarity and authority
