Bookclub is back and we will be reading The Value of a Whale: On the Illusions of Green Capitalism by Adrienne Buller. We’ve chosen this as it confronts the response of our governing institutions to climate and environmental breakdown and looks at the connections between financial power, economic injustice and the ecological crisis.

Join us for our first conversation on the book as we contemplate ‘in the face of an unprecedented crisis- what we really value.’

Don’t have time to read the book? No worries! Our usual friendly catchup session will run in a separate room at the start, so you won't feel like you've walked into the wrong pub quiz. Veterans of our previous book adventures will spot how this book complements and builds upon what we've explored before.

You can expect bookclub to be all the thought-provoking conversation of a late-night pub debate, just with more clarity the next morning!

About Bookclub:

The ACAN Climate Literacy Bookclub will seek to start and facilitate conversations on systems level change. A book or chapter will be chosen for each session for collective discussion and learning on the topics that the text explores. These will be hosted online primarily, and we invite participants to form their own groups for sharing the books and in discussing ideas. So far we have read Braiding Sweetgrass, Doughnut Economics, The Good Ancestor and Thinking in Systems, as we aim to unpick themes of ecological connection and reciprocity with the living world.

For anyone who has not joined us so far please do feel free to get involved, we would love to have you there. These sessions are currently hosted online however if you want to start an in person group, let us know where you are based and we can support or link you up with other interested people (we’ve recently had one start in Corfu!).

For these, and any other queries (e.g. if you are struggling to source a copy of the book), we will try and assist wherever possible. You can join the ACAN Climate Literacy whatsapp chat https://chat.whatsapp.com/L8yoxLGf6dNCcogxYbk55L or email us at climateliteracy@architectscan.org for further information.

About the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN)

ACAN is a network of individuals within architecture and related built environment professions taking action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown. ACAN directs personal expertise and singular efforts towards a common goal - systemic change in the profession and the construction industry at large. ACAN operates without commercial affiliations or support, allowing the network to act at pace and with autonomy. Through collective action, ACAN is working to demand, instigate and propagate the transformation of the construction industry.

To enable ACAN to continue to offer a range of events, and to support our ongoing work, please do consider purchasing a paid ticket (£3) and/or become a Member. Free tickets are also available!

Any other contribution, however small, will go directly towards our vital work and would be most gratefully received. In solidarity.
