Accelerator – the Knowledge Quarter’s latest asset!
Fri 9 June 2017, 12:30 – 14:00 BST
Accelerator, the latest asset in the Liverpool Knowledge Quarter, is due to open in July 2017 and is a £25m joint project between the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Royal Liverpool Hospital. It is a facility for businesses both small and medium sized who are focused on the life science and health sector. These companies, who traditionally struggle to market to health care providers, will benefit from being on the health campus at a time that the hospital positions itself as a “route to market.” These companies will bring healthcare and life science solutions otherwise unmet by the larger companies that typically trade with the health service. This supports the Royal Liverpool’s ambitious R&D agenda and allows our patients to access the latest available healthcare innovations.
With Accelerator’s focus on “disease resistance” i.e. the difficult or currently unmet diseases, from Malaria and Zika through to Oncological disorders resistant to chemotherapeutic agents, we have already started to attract a broad spectrum of companies from across the globe. These include “Big Data” companies using grid computing algorithms to spot disease before clinically evident, wireless real time vital signs sensing technology manufacturers, chemical companies building the next generation of medical polymers and spin outs from larger companies (>£1bn turnover) who manufacture and sell insecticides and other mosquito attack prevention systems.
Within the life science community there is a real buzz around the Accelerator and for the Royal Liverpool this new facility will bring innovation and jobs to the Liverpool Health Campus benefiting patients whether local or through the global impact that the Accelerator’s occupants will have.
