Event description

Description

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a 'third-wave' cognitive-behavioural therapy that aims to boost psychological flexibility - the ability to move in a direction that matters to you, even in the presence of unwanted experiences (thoughts, feelings, physical sensations), and in changing circumstances.

ACT has been shown to be particularly helpful for persistent psychological difficulties such as distress associated with chronic pain, depression and psychosis, and adjustment to significant life changes. In acknowledgment that efforts to get rid of persisting difficulties may not be particularly workable, ACT instead aims to change our relationship with aversive experiences by helping people to build a mindful awareness of these experiences without getting caught up in reacting to them. Rather than struggling to get rid of suffering, ACT helps people to be guided in their behavioural choices instead by what it is that matters to them.

ACT can be applied in a range of settings including health services, educational settings, sporting contexts and forensic facilities. This two day introductory workshop will guide attendees through the fundamentals of the ACT model, its evidence-base and highlight approaches to assessing and formulating presentations, allowing attendees to learn about ACT techniques and strategies. There will be opportunities to understand how ACT can be applied across a range of mental health and other difficulties and how ACT intervention can be culturally adapted for use with underserved populations.

There will be experiential exercises within the workshop which may involve coming into contact with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings; please be aware of this in deciding whether to come.

The 2-day workshop will take place at the Quaker Meeting House, 22 School Lane, Liverpool which is 10 minutes walk from Lime Street Train Station:
