Overview

Following the success of the first workshop in July, we're running it again!

This one-day workshop  aims to offer a novel and interactive way to learn about the ‘head, hands and heart’ of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).  It is intended as a fun and engaging introductory level workshop aimed at providing an overview of the approach and an opportunity for delegates to ask lots of questions about the theory, practice, and process of ACT.  The morning will comprise an interactive teaching presentation around the key features of the model and its application in practice.  The content of the afternoon will be determined by the audience. Our intention is to address questions chosen by the audience using a variety of methods including demonstrations, role play, video and interactive discussions.  The event will tie in with the release of our book of the same name and we will set ourselves the lofty target of teaching you 100 useful things about ACT over the course of the day.

What you will learn

Given the flexible nature of the day, we have flexible learning objectives.  However, the content will be drawn from the following areas, and we will cover each of these, at least in part:

1. The Head of ACT – Philosophy and theory

  • Key Behavioural Principles
  • Relational Frame Theory (RFT)
  • Key processes in the ACT model

2. The Hands of ACT – Technique and practice

  • Assessment and formulation
  • Techniques for moving ACT processes
  • Structuring ACT interventions

3. The Heart of ACT - Context, strategy, and process

  • ACT in the context of other psychological interventions
  • Making decisions in practice
  • Issues within the therapeutic process

Eligibility

This workshop is most suited to professionals who have some familiarity and experience of using psychological interventions, for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, in their work. No previous knowledge of ACT will be assumed and it will be suitable for those new to the approach.  We also hope it will be useful to people who already have some familiarity to ACT and some experience of using the model in their practice.
