About this event
This open session is for people with disabilities, neurodivergence, or sensory sensitivities who may benefit from additional support when using our workshop space.
An ETL staff member will be on hand to support you, along with two experienced ETL volunteers. Unlike our regular Open Sessions, you do not need to book an induction before signing up. Instead, we’ll take time during the session to explore which tools you feel comfortable using and help you find suitable alternatives for any that don’t feel like the right fit.
What to Expect
- A friendly, inclusive environment where you can learn and create at your own pace
- Your own workbench and access to a wide range of large-format woodworking tools
- Supportive guidance from ETL staff and volunteers
- The opportunity to work on a project of your own choosing — or, if you’re looking for inspiration, we’ll have a few simple project ideas to get you started
This is a space to explore new skills, gain confidence, and connect with others in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
Accessibility
- We have two tickets dedicated to wheelchair users per session.
- Personal assistants do not need to book a separate ticket, they can just come along.
- The workshop can be a loud environment with lots of different noises and vibrations coming from various machines. We have ear defenders for you to use, and a quiet space is available too.
- We have an hearing loop installed, height adjustable bench and non-slip gripping aids available. You can find more information and a visual guide in our Portobello Workshop Accessibility Guide here.
At the Edinburgh Tool Library we are committed to make our workshops as inclusive and accessible as possible. We understand we may not yet meet every needs, but we are continously working to improve our spaces and services in the best way we can. If you hava any feedback, or specific access needs you'd like to discuss, please get in touch with Carolina at carolina@edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk
