About this Event

ccidents and Physical Comedy Masterclass

Facilitator: Gonzalo Alarcón (Cross Pollination Group)

as part of the Health & WELLth Festival organized by Intercultural Roots

Description:

Accidents in physical comedy arise from the dialogue between technical, choreographic and dramaturgical elements in a scenario focused on chaos and failure. They could be defined as “a surprise created by thwarting expectation”, “the sudden and temporary break of the quiet order of things” or “the longest way from one point to another“. Accidents always create a diversion, a subversion of the narrative logic, a rupture.

Using a playful and physical approach, we will analyze the dynamics of stage action and the compositional style of comic performance. We will work with the rhythm of play, the stylization of character, the performer’s relation to his or herself, partners, space, objects and spectators. We will use elements of Slapstick, including accidents, falls and stage fighting, to explore our own clumsiness in order to rediscover the potential for theatrical transformation hidden in our everyday world.

This workshop draws inspiration from physical comedy, the surprising clumsiness of the famous Clowns of the big screen (B. Keaton, C. Chaplin), and the simplicity and depth of a dramaturgy which calls upon universal characters. Following these principles, Gonzalo has developed a comical language that is close to that of slapstick comedy, but which at the same time resonates with contemporary performance.
