About this event

Half-day course
The 2015 report by Public Health Wales, the Welsh Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study states:
“There is a growing body of evidence that our experiences during childhood can affect health throughout the life course. Children who experience stressful and poor-quality childhoods are more likely to adopt health-harming behaviours during adolescence, which can themselves lead to mental health illnesses and diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes later in life.”
“Adverse Childhood Experiences are not just a concern for health. Experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences means individuals are more likely to perform poorly in school, more likely to be involved in crime and ultimately less likely to be a productive member of society”.
Course aims:
- Increase understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences
- Define trauma, what can cause it and how it can present
- Explore how ACEs and trauma can impact on health and development
- Consider why a knowledge of ACE’s is significant for your work
- Understand the role of resilience in helping people to cope with the impact of ACEs and Trauma
- Explore what factors can support the development of resilience
- Welsh legislation, strategies, policies, programmes to support understanding and responses to ACEs, Trauma and Resilience
Who should attend?
This course is aimed at practitioners who work with children, young people and adults with ACEs, who are interested in building a knowledge and understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences and how to support those affected.

Feedback from participants:
I have an interest in aces and how they affect both children and adults. The course gave lots of information and resources on the padlet to read and use after the course.
Sian's delivery of the contents made it a really enjoyable session. She was really down-to-earth and warm and it made the session feel friendly and easy to engage with.

“Nid dim ond yng nghyswllt iechyd mae Profiadau Niweidiol yn ystod Plentyndod yn destun pryder. Mae profi ACEs yn golygu bod unigolion yn fwy tebygol o gyflawni’n wael yn yr ysgol, yn fwy tebygol o ymwneud â throseddu, ac yn y pen draw yn llai tebygol o fod yn aelod cynhyrchiol o’r gymdeithas”.
