This workshop is for teaching assistants to learn how to run a 12 week wonder lunchtime group for children identified has having or have had trauma in their lives.

This child centred intervention is truly trauma informed and based on the principal that 'attuning to the child is regulating the child' and in turn building capacity to regulate themselves.

This intervention is recommended for children who struggle with their emotional regulation within unstructured times of the day.

Delegates will learn the therapeutic principles of 'holding space' for the child and how relational repair works. Recognising themes and how to address them.

Children who have experienced trauma have a deficit in learning and attuning which has affected the lower parts of the brain stem.

First are somatic issues which are addressed through rhythmic movement and activities.

Second is an attachment which is addressed through intentional empathetic understanding with curiosity without being emotionally intrusive. The child is engaged with unconditional positive regard.

The third is cognitive function addressed through storytelling and making meaning of life experiences all this is done through an environment rich in a hands-on activity and play following a predictable pattern, alternating child-led time with a teacher-led activity.

Themes covered for the weekly wonder group are :

• What's my story
• How do I know I am relaxed

• Where in the tree - feelings

• Body sensations - when to listen
• Anger is …?

• 2 weeks - Traditional fairy tales and nature stories address the feeling and gradually awaken a moral sense for knowing right from wrong.

• I am a good listener
• What pushes my buttons/what helps me to be calm?
• How I recognise what other people are feeling
• Who do I have in my life who cares /exploring feelings of safety.
• Good things about me
