Event description

Description

ACORN Brighton is officially launching on the 21st of October with a training day for potential community organisers to build a tenants union and anti-poverty organising group in Brighton.

Our city is in the middle of a housing crisis. The average rent for a one bedroom flat is over £900 per month and over £600 per month for even a single room in a shared house. 37 per cent of these homes are in sub-standard condition. Thousands of us are in temporary accommodation and the amount of us sleeping rough on our streets continues to grow. With rent prices increasing by between 10 and 20 per cent a year many of us are just one pay check away from homelessness. We need to fight back!

This workshop will give local community organisers the training and tools needed to build a tenants union in our city. We will learn how to build support through door knocking, using social and local media, and how to use people-power to fight back agsint our landlords and have more say in how we run our communities. Most importantly, we will learn how to win!

This event is open to everyone who wants to make positive changes in our community but space is limited so please reserve your place in advance.

ACORN is a tenants union that has won major victories in Bristol and Newcastle that is slowly growing up and down the country to become the biggest mass movement tenants union trying to fix the broken housing conditions that leave many in poverty.
