What will be covered?

In this session we will focus on the Spectrum 5.1 procedure, Acquisition and accessioning. This is the process of taking legal ownership of objects, especially (but not always) to add to your long-term collection. Accessioning is a formal commitment by your governing body to care for objects over the long term.

We will examine topics such as due diligence, ethics, policy driven decision-making, and recording written evidence of transfer of title.

The end portion of the session will feature scenario-based discussions about acquisition and accessioning.

Please note – this session focuses on managing and documenting upcoming acquisitions and will not cover resolving historic issues.

There will be opportunities to ask questions during the session, as well as share ideas with other attendees.

Format

This session is workshop style with opportunities to ask questions throughout. There will be a 10 minute break around 11am.

Who should attend?

Trustees, managers, beginners, volunteers.

Session preparation

  • Think about your in-house procedures for Acquisition and accessioning.
  • Think of any specific questions, issues and priorities.
  • Attendees are welcome to suggest ideas for scenarios for discussion, but there is no guarantee that these will be used.
  • Ensure you have a working microphone, so you can fully participate.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session, attendees will:

  • Understand the Spectrum requirements and policy guidance for Acquisition and accessioning.
  • Understand the Spectrum suggested procedure for Acquisition and accessioning.
  • Understand the importance of having clear ownership of collections in relation to the MA’s Code of Ethics and the Accreditation standard.
