Workshop Details

The first step is to prime 2 pieces of cartridge paper with Acrylic Gesso allow to dry, a brief demonstration will show how to draw portraits with hand outs. Drawing the head in charcoal, placement of features negative space and planes of the face. Moving onto a waterproof black pen to draw the main features, eyes, mouth and nose and then erase the charcoal.

Using diluted acrylic paint Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue and Phthalo Green starting with warm colours for the first application to head and allowing the paint to blend and drip, using the hairdryer to blow the paint and stop it from running too much. Work back into the damp colour with thicker pigment especially the eyes and negative space around the head, allow to dry. Using a damp cloth start to remove the thin glaze of acrylic paint around the features to create the structure and planes of the face. Work back into the head with acrylic glazes and add opaque paint for darkest and lightest values.

When happy allow the work to dry and add or remove finishing touches.

Final varnish with water-based acrylic varnish.
