Acting for a changed world in the midst of an environmental crisis

Acting for a changed world in the midst of an environmental crisis

By Worcester Cathedral

Overview

How we can personally and collectively make a difference to the course of environmental and ecological damage to our world.

It is one thing to be aware of the damage that humanity is doing to the environment, it is quite another to respond effectively. It can feel a frustrating process: as voters we each have only a single vote; venting our concerns to others with similar views may be cathartic but doesn't deliver change; preaching our worldview to those who disagree is fraught with failure. We too easily feel unheard as a result. This session considers how we can be more effective in acting for change through:

  • Understanding the diverse perspectives of others, based on outside research.
  • Adopting cognitive approaches to our emotions in engagement with others.
  • Finding the appropriate communication and lifestyle approaches that work with the person and community that we are.

Staffan Engström was for many years a corporate executive and strategist in companies with multi-billion turnover, playing a key role in sustainability initiatives and serving on the Midlands Business in the Community advisory board. He has been a member and chair of Worcester Cathedral's Eco Group, and is a member of the cathedral chapter.
