ACTING FOR OPERA MASTERCLASS IN BERLIN

"I can’t recommend the course enough to singers starting out in the profession as well as those singers working professionally who want to develop their acting skills." Erika Madi Jones - Soprano

Learn Real and Practical Acting Skills For The Opera House in this four hour Masterclass. Supporting theory with acting exercises and YouTube clips, this is a high-quality, information-intensive, detailed overview of acting in the opera house and has always been well-attended and received excellent feedback from students.

At this workshop you will learn:

  • How to use the Galaxy of your Imagination to create a dynamic performance and to empower your singing by learning how to create a three-dimensional character.

  • Energise and physicalise your singing.

  • Learn real acting skills you can use and apply from you first day of rehearsal to your final performance.

  • How to research your character before you set foot in the rehearsal room.

  • Vital and very important stage skills, such as how to gesture, which are rarely taught to opera singers.

  • Learn about period study and movement.

  • Have the confidence to go to your first rehearsal knowing you have done your all your research, understand your character and the relationships, knowing at the outset what you need to do to reach your performance level in what is likely to be a short rehearsal period.

  • Every attendee receives a course material booklet of the information covered during the afternoon.

  • This Masterclass will be delivered in English but time will be added to allow for translation.

Recent ACTING FOR OPERA workshop feedback:

"Norman's performance coaching work here was very well designed and adapted closely to the requirements of the course. He was happy to work with colleagues to adapt and refine and his work with the students was pitched at the correct level. The course developed over the two years and students worked in the second year to build on the topics covered in the first year. This was largely to teach the vocal students dramatic and interpretive skills to prepare them for the operatic stage. His teaching was very successful with the students; their skill set improved dramatically and it gave them a firm basis on which to build for their first stagework in opera chorus during Year Two. He is a constructive, positive and collaborative colleague."
Prof Lynne Dawson - Head of the Vocal Faculty - Royal Northern College of Music

This ACTING FOR OPERA workshop will focus on much-neglected and rarely-taught practical acting skills specifically tailored to the requirements of the singer in the opera house. Taught by Norman Cooley, a classically trained actor, teacher and director, the workshop is divided into four sections. The 4 hour programme is comprised of theory and supporting exercises, improvisation and theatre games, with nuts and bolts stage skills and the use of example film clips of operatic performances.

Workshop attendees will learn:

1) How to tell the story.

2) How to create a character & develop character relationships.

3) Crucial and practical stage skills rarely taught to opera singers.

4) Applying the skills we have learnt with one or two participant singers with arias supported by an experienced accompanist.

Sing in the Practical*

For the practical section, we need one or two singers with a 4-5-minute (or less!) aria to work for 30 minutes each applying storytelling and other skills learnt during the workshop. The arias must be known by heart.

As the workshop will be delivered in English, it is possible that the timing for the training will be longer due to language and translation, and therefore we may only be time for one singer. I will make a decision on this based on the make up of the group.
