Event description

Description

The World Health Organisation defines active aging as "the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age" (WHO, 2002). In this seminar Professor Asghar Zaidi will be talking about his work on active ageing in the European Union and Asia-Pacific countries, most recently looking at China and South Korea. His premise is that the opportunities for active ageing in older age are to be defended as a human right, regardless of whether it is the right to employment or to social activities such as political participation and voluntary work. The promotion of active ageing is then synonymous to fighting ageism at various segments of our society.

Asghar Zaidi is Professor of Social Gerontology at Seoul National University, Korea; Visiting Professor at London School of Economics and Political Science and Senior Research Fellow at University of Oxford, the UK. Previously, he was Professor in International Social Policy at University of Southampton (UK); Director Research at the UN-Affiliated European Centre Vienna (Austria); Senior Economist at OECD in Paris (France) and Civil Servant at the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions in London.

Asghar’s research spans measurement of active and healthy ageing, the well-being of older persons and those with disabilities and data on ageing and older persons. Since 2012, he has led the research work of the Active Ageing Index Project for European Commission/ UNECE and the Global AgeWatch Index project for HelpAge International. He helped develop Age UK’s Wellbeing in Later Life Index, during 2015-2017. He has recently completed projects on constructing the AAI for China and Korea (for the EU-China project in Beijing); on human rights of older persons (for British Council in Islamabad) and on dementia in Pakistan (for Age International UK). He is currently a Steering Committee member of the ASEM Global Ageing Centre in Seoul and an Advisor to the Steering Group of the UN Titchfield City Group on Ageing.
