Event description

Description

Active Gloucestershire welcomes organisations from across the county to attend this county wide network, designed for organisations, groups and individuals working with those aged over 60, but also will be of interest to those working with people approaching older age.

This is an opportunity to come together to celebrate, promote, develop and enhance opportunities for older people across the county to be active for life

Anyone is welcome to attend this forum, but we feel it would be particularly useful for those working to increase opportunities for older people in Gloucestershire to become physically active including:

  • Those working directly with older people in Gloucestershire

  • Voluntary and community group representatives

  • Community, care home or residential settings

  • Health and wellbeing professionals

  • Service providers

  • Activity providers, deliverers or facilities that older people access

  • Statutory organisations

We are delighted to be joined at the next forum by our key note speaker Alex Rotas, for a showcase on positive active ageing.

“Alex takes award winning photos showcasing the achievements of athletes in their 60s through to 100+ who still compete on the world stage. She’s going to share some of these images with us and talk too about her large outdoor exhibition that was outside City Hall in central Bristol through the month of August. Her pictures serve as a challenge to the dominant visual narrative of ageing that either takes a short cut to representing old age by showing a photo of wrinkly hands (there’s a NoWrinklyHands hashtag campaign on Twitter she’s part of!) or that shows ageing as a time of over-arching dependency, frailty, passivity and loneliness spent, it would seem, forever stuck in a chair. Her subjects are joyful, vibrant, purposeful, determined wannabe record breakers who sprint and throw things (javelins, shot puts, weights, themselves) at impossible speeds and over impossible heights and distances. She promises us it will be fun but with a serious message too.”

The full session will cover:

Key note address - positive active ageing from Alex Rotas

  • Campaigns to get older adults moving more
  • An interactive workshop on the support system for physical activity for older people in Gloucestershire

  • Sharing sessions

  • Networking time
