Active Bystander Training Session

Description: West Yorkshire Police within the Bradford District are offering a FREE Active Bystander session.

Our 2.5-hour Active Bystander sessions are aimed to promote discussions around bystandership and how we can help and support people in our community or workplace.

We will look at the concept of ‘Bystandership’ and the social science behind it. We provide participants with some practical tools that can be used personally to safely support and challenge others in difficult situations.

You will learn how you can empower others to step up or ask for help from allies or other services including the Police.

The aim of these interactive, engaging, and informative sessions is to explore the role of personal leadership and how you can empower others to step up and ask for help. From allies or other services to prevent abuse and harm.

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Define the role of a bystandership in the prevention of harm and abuse within your own community.
  • Discuss inhibitors that prevent bystander action.
  • Identify a range of tools that can be used to safely support and challenge others.
  • Discuss ways to support individuals that may discuss abuse
  • Practice the use of bystander tools.
  • Discuss the topic of sexual violence and harassment and how a bystander can support this abuse.

Don't miss this opportunity to make a positive impact in your community or workplace!

This in-person event will be held at Javelin House Police Station from 10am - 12.30pm and is open to anyone interested in attending.

There is free parking available on site, or close by at Morrisons with no time restrictions.

Please note there is NO disability access on this occasion.

We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before the event is due to start and refreshments will be provided.

We are all bystanders, who witness events unfolding around us. Sometimes we recognise events as being problematic. When this happens, we decide to do or say something and become an active bystander (either in the moment or at a later stage) or to simply let it go and remain a passive bystander. Social norms can be shifted to challenge behaviours by empowering people to become active rather than passive bystanders.

This opportunity supports the JogOn Campaign. JogOn is an action plan to tackle runner harassment, to encourage victims and witnesses to report incidents and ensure that there are consequences for unacceptable behaviour.

Information and support will also be given around the 'Ask for Angela' campaign. Ask for Angela is a national scheme that helps anyone who is feeling vulnerable on a night out to get the support they need. We will provide you with information about how the scheme works, how you can use it and how we support it in Bradford.
