Event description

Description

Registration is now open for the Active Sussex Network 2018, titled 'Activating Sussex: place-based solutions for local people's health and wellbeing'. The event takes place at the Malmaison Hotel at Brighton Marina, from 9:30am until 3pm on Thursday 22 February.

January marks the beginning of our new strategy and funding cycle for the next three and half years. We'll be looking at new ways in which partners can work together to reach new audiences and get local people active across the county.

We really want to engage with local partners to develop initiatives to help the most disadvantaged groups into activity (over 55s, people with disabilities, 14-19 year olds, those in the 24 most deprived wards). In essence, there is now less focus on traditional sport and supporting active people, and more on regular people across Sussex who are time-poor, lack facilities or feel self-conscious about exercise. We know that by encouraging all sorts of people to get active, we will be doing our bit to build a healthier society focussed on wellbeing and active ageing.

Meet the speakers

  • Sadie Mason is Chief Executive at Active Sussex. Sadie will begin the event by giving us the ‘Active Sussex Strategic Update’ and laying out our strategy for the next 3.5 years.

  • Karen Creavin, Head of Birmingham Wellbeing Services. In her talk on ‘Provoking Activity with Inactive Communities’ she'll talk about how to motivate inactive people and the best ways to encourage these communities to see the health and wellbeing benefits of getting involved in sport and physical activity.

  • Kerry McDonald will talk about ‘Using Insight to Support Funding Bids’. Kerry is Managing Director at The Bid Writing Business and has worked for in the sport industry for more than 25 years. He is a leading UK sports bid writer and was also one of the StreetGames Co-founders.

  • Paul Jarvis-Beesley, Head of Sport and Health at Street Games will be ‘Making the business case for public health investment in youth community sport’. Paul spent 22 years as Chief Executive before joining the Department of Health as Physical Activity Policy Manager. Paul has been in his current role with Street Games since 2010.
