Event description
A two-day retreat to explore the relationships between activism, storytelling & data - Lancaster University

About this Event

This two-day retreat will be a creative, relaxed space in which toe xplore the relationships between activism, storytelling and data science. The retreat is part of Remembering Resistance, a project that looks at women’s activism in the North of England. Through the project, we’ve collected hundreds of stories of activism. Now we want to explore their potential to bring about positive social change by using new approaches to data and data science. The two days will be organised around four themes guided by a series of questions. Most sessions will involve contributions from a data scientist, an activist and a storyteller to enable us to explore the intersections between these different perspectives in creative and interesting ways.

1.Discover: How can we find information to help bring about positive change? What resources do we need? Where can we get them from?

2.Delve: How can we make sense of stories & data relating to activism? How do we understand their potential to bring about positive change?

3.Democratise: How can we make data and stories more accessible & easier to use? How can better access to information about activism help support change?

4.Deploy: How can we use data and storytelling in activism?

How can academics, activists & storytellers collaborate to create new ideas? We’re keen that something concrete emerges from the retreat, so in the first day we’ll explore the first three themes of discover, delve and democratise. This will include looking at the concept of data literacy and other important related issues such as trust, privacy and ethics. On the second day, we’ll play. Using data collected by the Remembering Resistance project, we’ll develop prototypes and ideas that aim to deploy data and stories to bring about positive change and generate new knowledge. We’ll end the retreat by planning how to take these ideas forward through new collaborations and projects. Here are the particulars:
