Course Description:

This course equips activity and care team members with the knowledge and practical skills to deliver meaningful, person-centred activities tailored to individuals in the late stages of dementia. It explores the impact of cognitive decline on engagement and introduces gentle, sensory-based approaches that support emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

Aim:

To enable participants to design and implement safe, compassionate, and effective activities that meet the unique needs of individuals with late-stage dementia.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least three key characteristics of late-stage dementia that affect participation in activities.
  2. Demonstrate two adapted activity approaches suitable for individuals with limited verbal communication.
  3. Create a weekly activity plan that incorporates at least four sensory or low-stimulation activities.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of an activity using a simple observation or reflection tool.
