Advances in technology have done much to improve cyber-security, but achieving digital security is inherently a socio-technical endeavour. In this talk Professor Joinson will discuss how behavioural and social science has contributed to work on both national- and cyber-security. From his research that sought to predict violent extremism action, to his work as Director of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Digital Security by Design Social Science Hub+, he will discuss the ways in which social scientists can work across disciplinary boundaries and the ways social scientific methods and theories can challenge – and enhance – our understanding of technologies.

About the speaker:

Professor Adam Joinson conducts research on the interaction between human behaviour and technology. He is a Professor of Information Systems at the University of Bath, the Director of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Digital Security by Design Social Science Hub+ ('Discribe'), and the programme lead on risk and online behaviour for the national Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats.
