Acclaimed author and journalist Adam Mars-Jones will launch ‘Box Hill’, his first novel in nearly a decade.

About this Event

Author and journalist Adam Mars-Jones will launch ‘Box Hill’, his first novel in nearly a decade, in this book chat with Centre For New Writing co-director Kaye Mitchell.

‘Box Hill’ is a sizzling, sometimes shocking, and strangely tragic love story between two men, set in the gay biker community of the 1980s. The book is the winner of the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize.

Adam Mars-Jones’s first collection of stories, ‘Lantern Lecture’, won a Somerset Maugham Award, and he has twice appeared on Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists’ lists. His 2008 debut novel ‘Pilcrow’ was hailed as a “gripping, tragicomic, Proustian tale” by Margaret Drabble in The Spectator, while follow-up ‘Cedilla’ was called “the most original novel of the year” by the Times Literary Supplement.

His essay ‘Noriko Smiling’ (Notting Hill Editions, 2011) focuses on Yasujiro Ozu, a master of Japanese cinema. His memoir ‘Kid Gloves’ was published by Particular Books in August 2015. He writes book reviews for the Observer and the LRB.

'Box Hill’ starts on the eighteenth birthday, in 1975, of Colin as he takes a walk on Box Hill, a biker hang-out. There he accidentally trips over Ray, a biker taking a nap under a tree. Ray immediately takes control of the situation, and Colin moves in with him that night. A sizzling, sometimes shocking and strangely tragic love story between two men, ‘Box Hill’ is a stunning novel of desire and domination by one of Britain’s most accomplished writers.

This event is brought to you by Fizcarraldo Editions, International Anthony Burgess Foundation and Blackwell’s Adam will be in conversation with Kaye Mitchell, and there will be a book signing at the Blackwell’s bookstall at the end of the event.
