As the climate changes, impacts from changing temperature and rainfall patterns and more extreme weather events are already affecting Scottish workers and workplaces. Our places were not designed to cope with these new conditions and more frequent disruption, negative impacts on health and wellbeing and declining productivity are being observed across sectors. The Scottish trade union movement is committed to safeguarding workers' wellbeing today and in the future.

Introduction to climate change, what it is and what it means for Scotland
Overview of key terms such as adaptation and mitigation
Legal context for climate action
Examples of how climate impacts are already impacting schools, offices, warehousing, care homes, hospitals and outdoor workplace settings
Practical actions that can be taken to adapt to our changing climate, build resilience and protect workers

Who is it for?

The session is open to members of all Scottish trade unions. No prior knowledge or experience is required. It will, of course, be of particular interest to health and safety and green/environment reps, but is very much open to all. The aim is to present to, and hear from, a wide range of views - including those already interested in climate action to those who are sceptical. And to work together to help develop useful resources.

What will this event deliver for workers in Scotland?

This webinar while a useful standalone session for those with limited time, is part of a bigger project. Adaptation Scotland and UNISON Scotland, working with other interested trade unionists, plan to co-create a handbook for adapting Scotland’s workplaces to climate change. This is part of a joint project with the STUC and will deliver a handbook and video presentation resources that will help trade union reps to champion well-designed workplace adaptation solutions that also help tackle inequality, social justice and other issues affecting workers.
