Event description
Adapting the Survive: The Country House and the Pandemic with Ben Cowell.

About this Event

Ben Cowell will consider the challenges that Covid 19 has thrown at the country house. Its owners, the local businesses that may partly depend on it, its audiences, and its very fabric have been put under stress. How have houses, large and small, managed to adapt to uncertain circumstances? What lessons can be learnt from previous crises? And how might policy and practice help to ensure survival and long-term sustainability? These are questions relevant to all country and historic houses around the world.

Ben Cowell is the Director General of Historic Houses, which represents over 1,500 of the UK’s historic houses, castles and gardens, all independently owned. Ben has worked previously for the National Trust, English Heritage, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. He is the Deputy Chair of The Heritage Alliance, sits on the Government’s Heritage Council, and is a member of the Council of the Attingham Trust. Ben has published widely on subjects relating to history and heritage.

This will be hosted by David Adshead, Co-Director of the Attingham Summer School, and with a Q&A session at the end.
