About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours 45 minutes

Join us to explore how you to act collectively for a just climate adaptation at work, how you can work more safely and collaboratively in extreme weather events, and discover ways you can to make a difference through your union.

This session is highly interactive and based on the principles of health & safety in the workplace and focuses on how you can manage the increased risks and vulnerabilities.

It also looks at need for a just transition to a stronger, fairer, greener society for everyone’s health and safety.

Uniquely, the course activities have been created to enable you to have a voice in the processes of climate adaptation at work. We will capture and communicate your concerns and ideas for improvements to your employer via your trade unions.

Who is it for?

The course is primarily for front-line workers, whether you work in the NHS, schools, social care, waste and recycling, streetscene, highways, parks, administration or any other role delivering vital services and support to our communities.

Managers at all levels are also welcome to attend too as it will help you to understand the needs of every worker in your team.

Course Aims:

1. To provide workers with information about climate change and how it impacts their community, their jobs, the services they provide, and the need for a just transition to a stronger, fairer, greener society.

2. To provide workers with the opportunity to understand and plan for changes and manage the increased risks and vulnerabilities associated with climate change and extreme weather events.

3. To enable workers to have a voice in the processes of climate adaptation, facilitate the capture and communication of concerns and ideas to their employer via trade unions.

The course will cover:

  • Climate, Weather and Just Transitions
  • Extreme Weather Risks, Health and Safety in Public Services
  • Planning, Collaboration and Communication
  • Collective and Individual actions & further learning

Worker Voice

Your course will be delivered by an expert tutor who will guide you and your fellow workers on a three-stage journey during your course:

  • Issues – how does this issue affect you and your colleagues?
  • Ideas – what would make things better for you and your colleagues?
  • Involvement – how can you and your colleagues get involve in making positive changes in your workplace, including through your trade union?

You will take part in activities that capture your voice and we will communicate the outcomes anonymously to UNISON local branches, self-organised groups and sectoral forums. This means voice on the subject is heard at the heart of your union’s democratic structures.

Organized by

The UNISON Cymru Learning team are responsible for working with members, activists and branches to organise the delivery of the union's Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) project and our member learning activities in Wales.

We organise on courses, workshops and conferences aimed at building the skills and confidence of the public service workforce, working in partnership with our Branches, employers and specialist learning providers.

WULF courses are open to all public service workers living and/or working in Wales, and we welcome workers who are yet to join UNISON and members of other unions.

All our courses take you on a journey - exploring issues that impact you in your workplace, discussing ideas for how you and your colleagues might improve things, and provide opportunities for you to get involved in making change happen through your union and beyond.

We also recruit Union Learning Reps and provide public service workers across Wales with advice, guidance and signposting relating to their learning and development needs.
