Event description

Description

Roughly 2/3’s of people living with dementia in the UK are living in the community. Many in their own home or in the home of a family member, some may be in sheltered housing. At the DSDC we recognise that there is often a knowledge gap that exists for people living in the community regarding adaptations that could support their cognitive changes, and enable them to remain in their home. We have been addressing the importance of dementia support design within health and social care services for many years, and hopefully as a result more of those environments are being designed and built to a standard that supports cognitive loss, but those same principles can be applied within domestic settings and housing.

This course focusses on the practical aspects of using dementia friendly design principles to adapt existing domestic environments and is appropriate for community based Occupational Therapists, dementia nurses, Care and Repair staff, family carers, people with dementia and anyone supporting an individual with dementia who resides in the community. Participants should have a basic understanding of the impact of dementia.

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

• Understanding the basic principles that contribute to an inclusive environment.

• Identify areas of concern within the living environment.

• Apply the dementia design principles and the environment intervention principles to

potential adaptations, to create individualised environmental interventions.

• Explore the concept of Bricolage in solving difficult adaptation issues.
