This online course for international school staff equips you to adapt teaching in a responsive way to meet the language development needs of multilingual learners alongside curriculum learning. The course introduces a range of easy-to-use strategies that you can implement immediately into your teaching to make lessons more accessible for pupils who use English as an Additional Language (EAL) while maintaining high expectations of all learners.   

 

Who is this course for? 

All primary and secondary practitioners, including: 

  • EAL teachers; 
  • Subject teachers; 
  • Teaching assistants.

Course structure: 

Module 1: 

Pre-webinar online tasks, completed at your own pace over a one-week period. 

You will: 

  • Consider how proficiency in English and other key factors can affect academic achievement of multilingual learners. 
  • Explore some effective strategies that you can implement immediately to better support your learners using EAL. 
  • Evaluate different strategies and consider their use in your own teaching context. 

Time commitment: minimum 2 hours. 

 

Module 2: 

Live interactive webinar with the course tutors: 

  • Primary: 21 May 2025, 11:00 UK time (UTC+1). 
  • Secondary: 22 May 2025, 11:00 UK time (UTC+1). 

You will: 

  • Explore in more depth strategies for developing writing and oracy and ways to adapt them to work with EAL learners at different proficiency levels. 

Time commitment: 1 hour.  

 

Module 3 

Final project to implement learning from the course, followed by tutor feedback. You will apply what you have learned in modules 1 and 2 by designing a task or sequence of tasks for your own teaching practice, using the strategies presented on the course. 

Time commitment: minimum 2 hours.

All our tutors are experienced teacher educators with substantial experience of teaching and assessing multilingual learners in relevant contexts. Tutors are trained e-moderators and offer friendly, practical specialist support to all participants throughout the course.
