Event description

Description

2017 marks Addaction’s 50th anniversary – with the letter from Mollie Craven appearing in the Guardian newspaper on 24th February 1967. We want to celebrate this achievement with as much service user engagement as possible – and as such, we would like to have a party!

On this day in 1967 Mollie Craven wrote to the Guardian with an impassioned plea about the lack of support to her and parents like her with children with a heroin dependency. ‘‘We parents of addicts are a neglected and ignored group” she wrote. Unfortunately her son died from his addiction. From this tragic event APA (Association for the Prevention of Addiction) was born. Mollie continued her tireless work to campaign and influence for support until her retirement in 1990. The same year Peter Martin the first CEO was appointed. At this stage it is hard to believe that there were just 4 full time staff. There were 700 by the time Peter retired.

In March 1998 APA became Addaction at a relaunch attended by amongst others Princess Anne. Addaction Scotland came into being in September 2004 with the first service in North Glasgow which is when Andrew Horne started.

So come and join us for a day (and night)of fun and celebration. with :
