How to provide effective advice and support to managers: This is a course developed from years of experience in managing and investigating a variety of bullying and harassment (B&H) scenarios from the simplest to the most complex. This course is designed predominantly for use as part of proactively addressing bullying & harassment issues both within and outside grievance, B&H and disciplinary processes.

Target audience: It is aimed at HR & OD professionals who provide advice and guidance to workplace managers and investigators in tackling bullying and harassment issues.

Aim: To understand the legal background and current NHS context, the common B&H issues and best practice in addressing those issues and how this effects the advice and guidance given and how this fits into an effective anti B&H strategy.

Objectives:

• Examine the UK and NHS context to B&H in the workplace
• Provide a synopsis of the legal framework and relevant case law affecting B&H
• Introduce the 21 negative behaviours B&H of the British Workplace Behaviour Survey
• Understanding the common B&H issues
• Identify the component parts of an anti B&H strategy
• Managing problematic issues
• Role of HR in proactively addressing B&H.

Outcome:

• Familiarisation with the relevant legal framework and context to B&H.
• Understand what constitutes B&H behaviour and the most common issues.
• Describe the structure of an effective and holistic anti B&H strategy
• Recognise and manage common problematic areas
• Identify the role of HR in addressing B&H with a reactive and proactive approach.

This course utilises a variety of teaching styles, including facilitator presentation, participant discussion, group exercises and scenarios. All activities take into account participants’ individual learning styles and provide a broad range of experiential and shared learning.

All delegates have access to twelve months post course support to help them to embed their learning

Prework: There will be some pre-work in the form of a short questionnaire to fill out about your key areas of concern, problematic issues and the policies in your organisation, please ensure you have time to familiarise yourself with your organisations policies and procedures and complete the questionnaire before you register for the session. This will be used to inform the structure of the session.

A highly experienced senior manager in a number of public sector and NFP organisations. With over 40 years investigative experience, 10 years of which as Head of Investigations in Professional Standards, he has a proven track record as a nationally accredited investigator across a wide range of disciplines including serious incidents, public complaints, workplace grievances and misconduct matters. He has substantial understanding of policy making in this arena and was the key decision maker in two organisations for all disciplinary and complaints cases. He is an OCN accredited workplace mediator, ILM accredited investigator and a member of the Association of Workplace Investigators. He is the author of a recently published report into B&H in an NHS Trust.

Competencies covered: The session will address Capability Builder and HR & OD Expert at level 2 & 3 from our HR Competency Framework.

If an event is overbooked and the maximum attendance has been reached from a particular trust, the events team may need to cancel any further places that are booked. In the event that you’re not able to attend, please let us know within 5 working days of the event or we will charge a £100 cancellation fee regardless of the reason given for cancellation or non-attendance. We know that there are many good reasons why people are not able to attend HPMA London events they have booked on, however the cost per attendee at an HPMA London Academy can be as much as £200. We use the income generated by cancellation fees to deliver our events programme in the next financial year. If you want to appeal against a cancellation fee, please contact the team for a copy of the cancellation fee appeal form which will need to be signed by your line manager and returned within 14 days of the event.
