Event description

Description

We would like to welcome you to come and see the Old Silk Works in Warminster in order for us to share with you a shared vision of a centre that will address the dementia needs of your community.

After two years of searching for suitable premises, we identified the 200 sqm upper floor of The Old Silk Works to run our central day club service. It will be a multipurpose regeneration project close to the town centre, highly visible and easily accessed by the whole community, providing a range of new dementia services to older people.

The project will include a Day Club, building on our award winning models in Devizes and Trowbridge. It will provide 48 people with dementia per week specialised, inspirational support in a relaxed social setting. Attendees and carers tell us that day clubs reduce their social isolation, gives carer respite and even allows them to hold down jobs. It supports people with dementia to live well and to remain in their homes as long as possible.

In addition over 120 people will attend weekly Memory Cafes, Music for the Mind and Movement for the Mind sessions and carer support groups. The prominent building will afford AS to coordinate its 1:1 home support work in the area, provide information and support and a base for our advocacy and campaign work. Relevant activities will be scaled-up around the venue in partnership with the Warminster Community.

Dementia friendly premises require careful planning and expert knowledge. We collaborate with the Bournemouth University Dementia Institute and build on our over 27 year experience and the feedback from current day club members to design the perfect space.

Having found the perfect location, we are now faced with an access problem to the first floor. Through consultancy with a pro bono architect we concluded that the optimal access solution is a dementia friendly bridge from the adjacent car park. Lifts and stairs are deemed problematic by our service users and our proposed designs are seen as welcoming and inviting by the community.

In addition, there is need for substantial internal renovations, including the day club itself, kitchen, toilets and office spaces.

You have been invited given the role you play in the Warminster area, and to learn more about Alzheimer's Support and their intentions with the new building in Warminster. You will hear from a range of health stakeholders, our CEO Babs Harris, how dementia-friendly and community design will guide the new build, and a statement on behalf o the property owner Chris Lusty. We welcome you and look forward to discussions over drinks and nibbles. Please do get in touch with the event organiser David Josey at davidj@alzheimerswiltshire.org.uk if you have any further questions.
