Event description

Description

This one day conference will be of interest to clinicians, people with mental illness, carers, health and social care professionals, academics, researchers and policy makers.

The transgenerational transmission of mental illness and suicidal behaviour is of ongoing interest in NI where the rates of mental illness are suicides are known to be high, and related to exposure to the trauma of the Troubles. There is evidence that mental health problems can be passed from one generation to the next through their impact on family relationships and parenting practices, through genetic and other biological processes, and through legacy issues such as poverty and low educational attainment. This event will focus on research on the impact of ACES (adverse childhood experiences), family relationships, biological factors and parenting/ perinatal mental health, on the transmission of mental illness and trauma. The seminar will showcase research on the extent of, and innovative ways of addressing, transgenerational mental illness. The populations we will discuss will include infants and young children, mothers, families, young people in our schools and colleges, and veterans’ families. Finally, the event will also include a discussion on ways of involving service users, carers, and their families in mental health research in NI.

The Institute of Mental Health Sciences (IMHS) is an exciting new investment in mental health research at Ulster University. The IMHS will be working on a series of multidisciplinary projects to develop and test interventions in trauma exposed and suicidal populations and will be bringing together high profile collaborators for these projects with expertise on both the subject matter and interventions.
