Is this a free event?

Accepted Answer

The event is ticketed and free to adoptees, there is an option to give a voluntary donation and a portion of proceeds will be passed to the guest author.

Question 2

I am not adopted, may I attend?

Accepted Answer

The book club is for adoptees only, as we want to create a safe space for us to discuss issues that are relevant for us and to share personal experiences.

Question 3

If I attend, do I have to join in the discussion?

Accepted Answer

There is no pressure to speak or to join in the discussion. We will not be recording the event and will ask all participants to treat anything shared in the book club as confidential. You can keep your camera off if you prefer, and can use the chat function to comment or ask questions.

I have read the book and would like to submit a question for discussion, can I do this?

You are welcome to send your questions in advance to adultadopteemovement@gmail.com. You can also use the chat during the event, or speak on camera if you wish to.

Question 5

Is there any potentially triggering content in the novel I should be aware of?

Accepted Answer

The subject matter is adoption and its effects so please expect some themes of loss, rejection and abandonment, and descriptions of the treatment of birth mothers in the UK during that time period.

Question 6

Do I need to be based in the UK to attend?

Accepted Answer

No - all our books will be in English and we welcome adoptees from anywhere to join our book club. We plan to read books that are available in the UK and the US in different formats, for maximum accessibility to all English-speaking adoptees. Our events will be in the evening UK time.

Question 7

What if I have a book I'd like to suggest for a future book club meeting?

We'd love to hear from you! Please email us at adultadopteemovement@gmail.com. It can be any genre of fiction or nonfiction and must be adoptee-authored or of interest to an adoptee audience and written by an adoptee ally. We will approach the author to invite them to attend.

Question 8

I am adopted and also a birth parent or adopter, may I attend?

Accepted Answer

In order to make adoptees feel safe to discuss the issues raised in this book, we are asking those who also have another role in the 'adoption triad' not to attend. We will have other events that are open to any adoptee.
