Event description

A free group session for adults who need cycling tuition to learn to ride or improve their skills off-road.

The location will be Victoria Common in Northfield, 3pm-4pm. If you have your own bike you can make your own way to the Tennis Courts in Victoria Common where we meet, or pop in to Northfield Ecocentre beforehand. If you are borrowing a bike off us you will need to come to Northfield Ecocentre, 53 Church Road, B31 2LB, between 2.45pm and 3pm. If you can't make it for the whole hour just let us know in the booking form.

Ride Active is afterwards meeting up from 4.30pm so you are welcome to stay for that.

These are small group sessions.

On this session we will teach some or all of the following, depending on who attends, and subject to timing and progress:

- understanding safety equipment and clothing including helmet

- carry out a simple bike check

- get on and off the bike without help

- pedal without help and stop without help

– steer the bike properly and make it go where you want

– brake properly and smoothly, without skidding

– look all around while cycling

– control the bike with one hand

– cycle with consideration for other people including vulnerable pedestrians, dogs, etc

– react safely to emergencies and maintain control of the bike

Each participant will need a bike to take part in this course. You can hire one from us, free of charge, you can select this option when you book. This session is free of charge, but please consider making a donation to Northfield Ecocentre to support the running costs of Cycle South Brum.

Spectators are welcome, all we ask is that any children attending need to watch quietly so as not to cause a collision hazard.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit?

Ages 12 and over.

How will you monitor my progress?

We are now using a learning management system called Moodle. This will enable us to monitor your progress and plan the sessions accordingly.

What are my transport/parking options?

There is free car parking at the entrance to Victoria Common on Church Road. Buses 61 and 63, 18 and 27 run nearby. We are around 10 minutes walk from Northfield Station.

Please contact us if you need help planning a cycle route.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

You should bring a bike that is roadworthy unless you are borrowing one from us. We will show you how to carry out a safety check as part of the tuition. We can carry out minor adjustments only.

If you wish to hire a bike from us for this session then you will be able to request it when you book. If you wish to hire a bike then you MUST pick it up from Northfield Ecocentre between 2.45pm and 3pm before the start of the session on the day of the session. If you arrive for bike hire after this time then there is no guarantee that anyone will be able to assist you with bike hire.

We strongly recommend that adults wear a helmet. We will show you how to fit the helmet properly as part of the tuition. If you don't have a helmet, you can borrow one.

Do I need one-to-one cycling tuition?

In most cases, no. Most people can learn to cycle in a group session. We can offer a limited number of free one-to-one sessions for adults or children who have a specific barrier that means they need additional help, such as autism, dyspraxia, hypermobility, a disability (including learning disability), chronic illness or mobility issue. Our instructors will identify anyone in need of this type of session. Please email if you need to talk to us about this.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Yes, please contact us at if you would like to transfer your ticket to another person.

Can I update my registration information?

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, we will send you a reminder email.

Weather policy

In the event of extreme weather conditions such as heavy precipitation or dangerous surfaces, it is at the discretion of our instructors whether to proceed or to cancel.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

No. Please make sure you answer questions about the name, age and ability of the attendee as fully as possible. This is to help us identify how best we can teach them. We need to know about the trainee, which isn't necessarily the same as the person completing the booking form.

These sessions are part of the Move More, Eat Well initiative. Participants are required to take part in a monitoring questionnaire. You will be asked a few questions when you register. Thank you in advance for your help.
