Tutor: Wendy Sinnamon

Join Wendy Sinnamon for this unique and engaging three-week poetry course. Using Scott McKendry’s 2024 Sunday Times Book of the Year Gub as a guide, we will explore how he creates a gritty and exhilarating poetic world. With guided readings and discussions, we will engage with his unique picture of Belfast and explore how he uses deadpan wit, subversive traditions and defiant rhythms to create a deeply personal and individual identity and relationship with place and history. We will engage with imaginative prompts that will explore how we can use dialect and humour to create our own poetic voice. We will examine how Gub uses tone shifts and line breaks to generate tension that resonates off the page. We will explore how McKendry employs fragmentation and conflict and use this as a mirror through which we can write our own personal geographies.

This workshop is suitable for writers of all abilities.
