Welcome to an awareness session on the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 (AWI Act). This is an interactive learning session of around 2½ hours that will require your full participation. This session will help to familiarise anyone working to safeguarding the welfare and manage the finances of adults who lack capacity to make some or all decisions for them due to a mental disorder or a physical disability. The awareness session will give you a better understanding of the AWI Act and how they impacts on your practice.

This session will support you to:

• Increase your awareness of the AWI Act and its main provisions.

• Gain a better understanding of the background and purpose of the AWI Act.

• Understand and apply the Principles of the AWI Act when working with individuals who lack capacity to make some or all decisions for themselves.

• Increase your understanding of the impact that Article 5 of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has had on the AWI Act,

• Better understanding of Section13za, Deprivation of Liberty and why Power of Attorney cannot always be used to admit someone into a care home.

• The session will also make you aware of upcoming proposed changes to the AWI Act and other pieces of legislation that will have an impact on mental health practice.

As these session are usually oversubscribed, if you find you cannot attend, please cancel your place either via Eventbrite or by emailing HSCPLearning@pkc.gov.uk This allows us to contact those on the waiting list and offer them a place.
