About This Course

This three day workshop is designed for people who have some training and experience in using compassion focused therapy having attended either a two or three day training course; are familiar with the basic evolutionary model; the role of affiliative emotion in threat regulation, distinctions between shame and guilt and competitive versus caring motivational systems and the dimensional nature of our minds.‍

Learning Objectives

- deeper understanding into the nature of compassion

- working within the therapeutic relationship

- developing the compassion focused formulation

- the nature of functional analysis

- using functional analysis to work with self-criticism and shame

- explaining and exploring multi-self and the interaction between threat-based emotions such as anger, anxiety and sadness

- how to use chair work to engage in different aspects of the self

- ways of deepening the concepts of the compassionate self and compassionate image

- ways of working with the fear and resistance to compassion‍


Workshop Leaders

Prof Paul Gilbert FBPsS, PhD, OBE is the founder of Compassion Focused Therapy, and is the President of the Compassionate Mind Foundation. He is an internationally renowned Professor of Clinical Psychology, who is particularly recognised for his expertise in the treatment of depression and shame. He has researched evolutionary approaches to psychopathology for over 35 years with a special focus on shame and the treatment of shame based difficulties, for which compassion focused therapy (CFT) was developed. He has written and edited 22 books and established the Compassionate Mind Foundation in 2006. He was awarded an OBE in March 2011.


Dr Andrew Rayner is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in private practice who specializes in Compassion Focused Therapy (and difficulties related to trauma). He has spent most of his career working in the NHS within secondary care services, and in recent years he has had the relatively unique experience of providing psychological support during a large scale historical abuse investigation. He currently provides training and participates in clinical research on behalf of The Compassionate Mind Foundation. He also works for Aspire Health and Care Ltd (providing input to young people and adults residing in supported living placements) and directs his own company Secure Base Psychological Services Ltd.
