Event description

Description

(Classes Ticketed Independently)

School of Modular (SoM) 2018 @ Elevator Sound Bristol

The Advanced course total's 10 hours (5 sessions @ 2hours) and has been designed to teach modular audio processing and synthesis.Techniques presented range from basic audio applications to advanced analogue computing schemes that facilitate complex audio applications. The courses focus on techniques rather than specialty modules. In this way you will learn to understand signal flow and analogue computing tools that allow for infinite experimentation in modular synthesis. Thus the most important outcome of reaching the top level of SoM is deep understanding of the signal characteristics that relate to sound and the signal processing intuition that allows to predict the outcome of convoluted modular patches. Each session will be delivered using patch schemes, audio examples and oscilloscope demonstrations allowing the students to develop thorough understanding of all aspects of modular sound.

Advanced Course

14/3 – Deeper understanding of signal manipulation is obtained by looking at control rate effects of filtering and lagging. Raw waveforms, triggers and gates are analysed for their potential in producing percussive sounds. Cross-modulation artefacts are demonstrated in their potential to produce or-gates for complex pulsation circuits. Special characteristics of low-pass and vactrol gates, burst-generators in conjunction with flip-flops are shown to promote extensive experiments and circuit design.
