CRAFT URBANISM: BEER GARDENS IN THE CITY FABRIC presented by Westword in partnership with the Biennial of the Americas 2013 On the afternoon of July 20 a pocket of downtown Denver will be activated by series of pop-up beer gardens. Drawn from the city’s urban fabric, four locations within a single block radius—14th Street, 15th Street, Wynkoop Street and Wazee Street—will be transformed into distinct spaces for people to gather and enjoy locally crafted beer. Scattered along the Cherry Creek River, above the river and between buildings, the sites will engage a pedestrian bridge, sidewalk and an alley. The experience of each garden will offer a unique view of the city and draw attention to different aspects of Denver’s urban design. Socially activating spaces not normally used for gathering, each garden will showcase beer from one of four local breweries—Denver Beer Co. (the official beer sponsor of the Biennial of the Americas 2013), Wynkoop Brewing Company, Great Divide Brewing Co., and Strange Brewing Company. Food from Mikes Kitchen will also be available. A sampling of urban spaces and beer, each garden, like the beer that will be served, will offer something distinct and different from the next. As a temporary redrafting of urban environments, Craft Urbanism invites a new way of experiencing the city of Denver. This special, one-day event is apart of Biennial’s 2013 exhibition, Draft Urbanism and culminates a series of Biennial cultural celebrations starting July 16- 20.
