Description

Abstract

In 2018 the Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy initiated a competition to look at the feasibility of a range of new reactor technologies, as the next step from the current water cooled reactor technology. Funding was given to 7 advanced fission reactor designs and a small fusion reactor to carry out the feasibility studies, which were completed by the end of the year.

These are now being assessed and up to 4 designs will have a share £40million for development work starting this Summer. The new technologies will use different coolants, different fuels and different fuel cycles, with the aim to get costs down, improve sustainability and safety.

The seminar will look at the how the policy was developed, at the proposed designs and identify the challenges that will have to be overcome to commercialised the new technologies. It will also look at how this relates to the SMRs (small modular reactors) and the developments in other countries, particularly Canada.

Speaker

Juan Matthews is Visiting Professor in Nuclear Energy Technology at The University of Manchester’s Dalton Nuclear Institute.

With a career spanning over 50 years, he has experience in nuclear and high technology industries across Europe, Asia, Russia and the Americas, and was until 5 years ago the nuclear specialist at UK Trade and Investment (now Department of International Trade).

He has a particular interest in advanced reactor technologies and spent many years on research for the development and safety of advanced fuels and materials.
