The content of this course is based on the Policy Profession Standards and to enhance understanding of how policy is developed within our department. The methodology encourages structured policy making through clarity on situation, evidence, options and solutions.
The half -day course covers the strategic picture, policy process, developing and delivering policy. It does this through active participation on a MHCLG case study.
Objectives
- Understand the Fundamentals of Systems Thinking:
- Define systems thinking and its key principles.
- Describe the characteristics of complex systems and their behaviors.
- Analyse and Map Systems:
- Identify and map the components and relationships within a given system.
- Use tools such as causal loop diagrams, iceberg model and stock and flow diagrams to visualise systems.
- Apply Systems Thinking to Problem Solving:
- Utilise systems thinking approaches to identify root causes of problems.
- Develop strategies for addressing complex issues using a systems perspective.
- Understand the importance of unintended consequences and their impact.

- Use knowledge developed during the day and apply it to a case study.
