Event description

Description

Safeguarding our most vulnerable pupils, including those with serious disabilities is a challenging task. This course is specifically for DSLs in schools for children with complex needs, so that they can consider the risks and challenges which they see regularly. DSLs in mainstream schools working with pupils who have complex needs, might also find the day useful.

Special schools are often complex organisations with a high numbers of staff, a wide-range of specialists and children whose medical needs may be life-limiting. There are around 1200 special schools in the country, and only around half of these serve pupils with complex needs. Expertise is often spread thinly, and so it is important that DSLs can come together and share their knowledge and learning.

The day has been carefully created by Carol McCarthy, a recently retired special school headteacher, and Andrew Hall, a specialist safeguarding consultant. In addition to the continuing professional development opportunity, this is a brilliant chance to meet and network with others working in a similar role.

DSLs who attend this CPD opportunity will receive a certificate of attendance to confirm that they have completed their statutory two-year safeguarding refresher as required by Keeping Children Safe in Education (2018). Each attendee will also take away their own copy of the Safeguarding Handbook, written by Andrew Hall.
