Course Aim

  • Develop skills in history taking, assessment and management of patients presenting to urgent care and primary care settings.

  • Recognise red flags and use problem solving to manage patients safely

  • Develop skills towards independent practice.


Course Content

  • Taking a structured comprehensive history and recordkeeping.

  • Cardiac assessment including common cardiac presentations

  • Respiratory assessment, physical examination and managing common disorders including COPD, Asthma, and pharmacological interventions.

  • Abdominal Assessment, examination and common disorders

  • ENT Assessmentand examination and common presentations including quinsy, identifying bacterial and viral infections,sinus problems, otitis media and externa.

  • Eye emergencies and disorders. Assessment techniques and fundoscopy.

  • Skin disorders : how to identify, assess and record.

  • History taking and assessment of gynaecological presentations

  • Neurological Assessment and physical examination skills

  • Clinical decision-making in headaches and back pain

  • Upper Limb masterclass

  • Lower Limb masterclass



This course uses problem based learning and case studies. There is a practical assessment session every morning. You will be given a competency document that can be completed under the supervision of a suitably qualified mentor. This could form part of your CPD portfolio. Completion of the competency document is optional and not compulsory. Meets many of the NMCRevalidation requirements.
