Overview

Advanced course - advanced tips and advice for foster caring wild hedgehogs and info about setting up a hedgehog rescue.

A re-run of my Advanced Level 2 course due to popular demand. This course is intended to provide tips, guidance and best practice for people foster caring wild european hedgehogs on behalf of a hedgehog rescue.

This course will also introduce key parasites and how they are picked up, faecal sampling and treatments for some key conditions/parasites. It will also cover some initial advice for those interested in setting up a hedgehog rescue.

I have over a decade's experience running a hospital for wild hedgehogs and training volunteers to help as foster carers. This course will provide you with the top tips I have learnt during this time and answers to the many questions asked by foster carers.

It is intended to supplement the advice and support given by your local hedgehog rescue. Please do not attempt to over-winter or care for a wild hedgehog without support from a local rescue.

We will cover the following topics with plenty of opportunity to ask questions. A list of equipment and treatments talked about during the course will be provided to participants after the event.

  • Legalities of caring for wild hedgehogs and importance of record keeping.
  • Hygiene for you and the hedgehogs.
  • Introduction to internal parasites - key parasites and how they are picked up.
  • Introduction to the basics of microscope testing (note this is not a full microscope training course) including microscope recommendations.
  • An introduction to medications and accessing them via a vet.
  • Things that can go wrong whilst foster caring and how to prevent them
  • Things to consider when setting up a hedgehog rescue - accommodation, access to medications, volunteers/support network, fundraising considerations and legalities.
  • Further learning.

This course is limited to a maximum of 25 participants. Funds raised will support my rewilding project in East Yorkshire.

It is possible to run this course as a bespoke course on request. Please get in touch for details.
