Description

Advancing Authentic Assessment Practice - Dr Lydia Arnold

Why would I want to use authentic assessment? And, how might I achieve this?

This talk aims to prompt reflection on these key practice-based questions. To set the scene I will first discuss the definition of authentic assessment, showing how the concept has multiple dimensions and how it may sometimes suffer from oversimplification. I will provide an honest evaluation of the benefits and challenges of this type of assessment from the perspective of both staff and students, and will share some real examples of authentic assessment in use. These range from small scale, formative, easily implementable ideas, through to approaches which have been pedagogically transformational. Finally, I will discuss the conditions and support approaches (e.g. use of exemplars, programme level curriculum design) that can help to enable successful and sustainable authentic assessment approaches.
