Event description

Description

Our learning disabilities work spans a number of areas, from examining the environmental, psychological and genetic factors that influence the risk of somebody with a learning disability experiencing a mental health problem to developing psychoeducation packages to help people with learning disabilities better manage their mood.

The event

We are looking forward to evolving the work of NCMH with people with a learning disability and the cohort of people who have signed up to take part in NCMH’s work. We are keen to explore with professionals and organisations in the field the pressing questions that a cohort of people with a learning disability may be able to help us answer.

The cohort was set up originally to take part in research on the genetics of learning disability and to explore mental health among people with a learning disability. However, in future recruitment it may also help to inform us about the life situations of people with a learning disability and how services and policies impact on their lives.

We are keen to identify key research questions that might be answered by recruiting a large group of people with a learning disability to work with us, and these could be in a range of areas:

  • Genetics
  • The mental health of people with a learning disability and interventions to assist
  • How specialist services best provide for people with a learning disability (e.g. supported living, day services, employment, education, social services, specialist learning disability health and mental health services)
  • How generic community services best provide for citizens with a learning disability, particularly in the transition of young people from education nation to adult life (e.g. public health, primary health care, CAMHS, housing, schools, colleges, apprenticeships and work-based training, job centres, employers)
