About this event

On the 4-5 October, Girlguiding North West England will be taking over Scout Adventures Great Tower in Cumbria, for a day packed full of fun activities. This event will be opened to all sections across the region.

This event will begin at 10am and finish at 4pm.

As this is an adventure site, the activities available will be quite physically demanding, with a range of activities including raft building, Jacobs Ladder, archery, tomahawk, as well as a range of crafts, bush craft skills and much more.

You will be provided with a full list of activities in advance of the day as we will be operating a Queue and Do system.

As this is a unit event, girls will need to attend with their leaders. You will also need to wear uniform. Please remember to follow adult/child ratios for this event.

Tickets cost £10 for Young Members and are free for Leaders. Please remember to add Leader tickets to your booking.

You will need to bring lunch and enough drinks with you to last the day. There are taps across the site for refilling water bottles throughout the day.

As this is a large scale event, Girlguiding North West England will capture it through photography/videography. It is the leader responsibility to advise if any members do not have photo consent, otherwise we will assume all consent is given.

This event is non-refundable and has been designed with weather contingencies in mind. Activities may be adjusted or rescheduled to ensure safety.

How do I get there?

The event is taking place at Scout Adventures Great Tower, Birks Road, Newby Bridge, Cumbria, LA23 3PQ.

Is there car parking?

There is free car parking on site and local parking for coaches. Where possible to reduce congestion and in line with our sustainability policy, please can you travel in larger groups across counties/divisions.

Is there a drop off point?

There is no facility for parents to drop girls off at this event. Units will need to arrive together and leave together. If you are meeting parents you will need to arrange a pre-determined drop off point away from the site.

What is the nearest train station?

Windermere is a 20 minute journey by car. We are currently exploring the possibilities of providing coaches from a variety of locations across the North West. We will provide further information as and when we know more.

What sections is this event for?

This is an event for all sections from Rainbows to Rangers.

Do the girls have to attend with a leader?

Yes, girls will need to attend with leaders. Please remember to follow adult/child ratios for this event.

Will my unit be kept together throughout the day?

Yes. Units will be kept together.

Will I need to wear uniform?

Yes, this a uniformed event. Both young members and leaders will need to wear uniform.

How much does this event cost?

This event is £10 per girl and free for leaders. This includes all activities and an event badge.

Can I amend my booking at a later date?

Once the bookings have closed you will not be able to amend your booking. This includes cancelling tickets, or requesting additional tickets. Bookings will close in July 2025 so you will have to amend if needed, as long as capacity allows this.

How will the day work?

Groups will be given a list of the activities available throughout the day and we will operate a Queue and Do system. It is advisable to discuss with your units what activities they are interested in doing as part of their day, prior to arrival, so that you can plan your day in advance.

Is this event suitable for members with disabilities?

This event is a very physically demanding day with activities such as tree climbing, leap of faith, archery and much more. Activities will often be on uneven and steep terrain. If you are unsure, please contact the region office to discuss individual requirements.

Will there be much walking?

There will be a lot of walking throughout the day between activities. We are working with the activity centre to map out an accessible route where a range of activities are available.

What facilities are available?

There are toilets available across the site as well as hot drinks for leaders. There are taps with drinking water across the site for refilling water bottles.

Will there be first aid covered at this event?

We expect leaders to provide first aid for their unit. Leaders will need to bring a first aid kit with them and you will be responsible for your unit. We will have a station for reporting any major incidents on the day. We would recommend bringing insect repellent with you.

What do I need to bring?

This is an outdoors event. Participants will need sturdy footwear (no trainers), weather appropriate clothing (layers, long sleeves, long trousers), sunscreen, water bottles (there are water taps across the site). Participants may get wet and muddy so changes of clothes may be needed.

What paperwork will I need?

Please ensure that you have completed consent forms, health forms, emergency contacts, and home contact prior to this event.

Will lunch & refreshments be provided?

Please bring a packed lunch and drinks for the day. Hot drinks will be available to leaders through the day. There is a small shop on site that sells cold drinks and a range of confectionary.

Risk assessments

There are risk assessments for all activities provided by the activity site and we will have risk assessments for all other activities provided by Girlguiding North West England. These will be available by July 2025 so please contact the region office at this time if your require copies.

What will my role be as a leader?

As a leader, you are expected to: Motivate and guide participants through challenges. Monitor group morale and wellbeing. Communicate any concerns to event facilitators promptly. Lead by example, demonstrating positivity and teamwork. Support or lead on any self-led activities.

What if someone in my group struggles with an acitivity?

Encourage them to try their best but never force participation in activities that feel unsafe or overly stressful. Work with the event facilitators to adapt the activity if needed. Our goal is for everyone to feel supported and included.

What happens if there is bad weather?

The event is designed with weather contingencies in mind. Activities may be adjusted or rescheduled to ensure safety. Leaders will be updated in real-time about any changes to the itinerary.
