Event description

Description

Welcome to our Advocacy (Courtroom & Arbitration) training – designed and taught by inter-disciplinary trained barristers with expertise in mind influences and decision-making processes. Maximum group size is 8 participants.

Welcome to the art of Advocacy 1-day course

Advocacy skills are essential for lawyers and other advocates and, being highly transferable skills, are highly beneficial for all people.

Dissemination of advocacy skills is particularly important now that there are new rules which allow Solicitors to conduct advocacy in court. These new rules provide an excellent change towards improving choice of legal representation for people. However, when it comes to courtroom action (or arbitration), solicitors are disadvantaged – advocacy not being part of their training. To increase fairness in dispute outcomes, all advocates should have the benefit of equal training.

For this reason, and advocacy skills being available to all people, this course is subsidised by The Accessible Genetics Consortium (TAGC) and the UK Law and Society Association (UKLSA).

This course is suitable for:

Solicitors, international lawyers and advocates of other causes, e.g. those promoting educational policy change and people who would like to improve their presentation and communication skills in general.

Why take this advocacy course

This course combines advocacy skills as taught at the English Bar with essential scientific knowledge, including on mind bugs and influences. Latest relevant findings of neuroscience and psychological science are incorporated in the training. The course also provides ample opportunity for individualised training and feedback on practical exercises.

Tailored-made courses also available for groups and individuals.

This course is directed by Fatos Selita, an English barrister and a New York State Attorney, with over 9 years of experience in advocacy and international public speaking training, including in the UK, USA and Russia. Additionally, Fatos is a trainer in brain processes and mind influences on decision making, as well as the director of the ‘Psychology for Lawyers: Brain, Mind and Behaviour’ and 'Decision Making: Brain, Mind and Behaviour' courses.

Includes:

  • Preparation skills, e.g. learning how to prepare for your advocacy/case, selecting arguments and arranging arguments
  • Delivery skills and techniques, e.g. making an impact, developing a likable personality, tailoring your advocacy to changing reactions of the judge/jury
  • Developing skills for effective advocacy, e.g. clarity, articulation, voice etc.
  • Removing obstacles for advocacy and public speaking, e.g. nerves, blanks, high adrenalin etc.
  • Practical training sessions to improve advocacy skills using the P-E-O-P-L-E technique developed by our inter-disciplinary (law, psychology and neuroscience) experts (this technique involves learning by practice and example)

Anxiety and nerves

Due to tutors’ experience and expertise in psychology and human development, significant success is expected in removing fear and nervousness.

International application

The course is enriched with elements of advocacy as applied in a number of other jurisdictions, including USA, Russia and Indonesia – countries in which the course directors have experience in courtrooms.

Training at law firms’ offices also available, subject to availability.
