The CIArb Virtual Workshop in Advocacy Skills for Arbitration Hearings is an essential course for Fellows, especially those who come from civil jurisdictions where dedicated oral advocacy training may not be available or those who simply want to brush up on their skills.
The course will be delivered on 15 and 16 July 2022 and will involve elements of both interactive learning as well and practical elements where candidates will be able to take part in a mock 1-day hearing before experienced arbitrators, receiving helpful feedback to improve their method and develop a more persuasive style.
The course will cover written and oral submissions and cross-examination of lay witnesses. Candidates will be expected to undertake pre-reading before arriving and the course will run for 9 hours over the two dates, being 3 hours on 15 and 6 hours on 16 July. Pre-reading will be published on Learn ADR at least 10 days before the workshop. Access will be provided via email.
This course aims to give candidates:
- Understand the purpose of written and oral advocacy
- Understand how to structure documents and oral submissions
- Gain knowledge and experience in techniques for examination of lay witnesses
- Practical experience of the essential elements of an evidential hearing
Failure to attend on the Friday 15th session may result in refusal of admission on Saturday 16th, to avoid disruption to other candidates experience.
Please note, the deadline for registering may be brought forward at the discretion of CIArb.
